Is Window Film Safe for Double Pane Windows?

Question

Sponsored Links

We would like to apply transparent window film on two windows in our loft. However, we have read that solar film should not be applied to double pane windows.

Is this true or is this only the case with some products?

Answer

There are some window film products that cannot be installed on double pane glass but that is not true with all window film products. It depends on from which material the window film is made of.

Some window film materials will cause heat build up between the two glasses causing it to break but others are made in a way that will prevent this.

For example our platinum window film or low-e window film (both which are transparent) are safe to use on double pane glass while our black window film which is made of vinyl can only be installed on the outside of the window if it is double paned.

So the key is to check the product itself. It should indicate "safe for double pane glass" or "not safe for dual pane glass" or "install only on the outside of double pane glass" etc.

Pella Glass Door and Windows in Media Room

by LAURA
( CALIFORNIA)

Question

I have a room and triples as a guestroom, playroom, and media room. I would like to be able to place and remove the blackout film often, is that possible?

Thank you

Answer

Hi Laurie,

You can put on and remove the black window film as often as you wish, but if you want to do it very often it might be a pain.

Please be aware that if your windows are dual pane windows you will have to install the black film on the outside.

Mirror Window Film

by Cece
(Dallas TX)

Question

Can I use this film on my TV screen? I want it to like a mirror when not in use and can I watch TV ..

Also I would love to use on my sliding doors to keep my apt cool. I live in Dallas and the sun is strong. Will it help?

Thank you please let me know

Answer

I wouldn't recommend putting the mirror widnow film on a TV screen. The screen is most probably not the right material to put the film on.

About putting it on your sliding doors, the mirror window film will definitely keep some solar heat out, but the more appropriate solution is the platinum window film.

Blackout Window Film that's White

Question

I want to use blackout film so bedroom will be dark. But I don't want to see two huge black rectangles from the street. Is there a blackout film that's white - has white on street side?

Answer

You can purchase room darkening window shades that are white on the back side.

If you want only privacy see our suggestions below:

You might be interested in frosted window film which is white and offers privacy.

Or you might like stained glass window film that is a pretty way to get privacy while offering a beautiful view from the outside, too.
