Transom Window Treatments?

Transom windows

Question

All of the windows in my home are transom windows. The transoms are attached to the bottom window. The windows measure 80L X 50W (including transom). The ceiling in most rooms is 9 ft. The bottom of the windows are approximately 1 foot from the floor.

My husband thinks that we should NOT cover the transom with window treatments. My concern is that the room will look chopped if we don't cover the entire window/transom unit. What is your opinion on covering transoms along with the window given the dimensions I listed above?

Thanks!

Answer

Hi Sheila

We have a window covering called mock shutters that looks very pretty on transom windows.

It separates the transom from the windows below while adding style to the transom. The mock shutters have openings that allow light in.

The lower windows can be covered with blinds or shutters. Or you can put drapes and a valance like in the picture above.

Horizontal Narrow Window
above my Entry Door

by Paige
(Georgia)

Question

I have 2 sidelights and 1 similar window above the door in my entryway. I have two sheers that hang in the sidelights and look great.

I can't find anything for the horizontal window. Do they make such a thing? What is that window called anyway?

Thanks for your help.

Paige

Answer

Hi Paige

The window on top is called a transom. We have a window covering called mock shutters that can be made specially to fit a transom.

However since you already have sheers on your sidelight windows maybe it would be the best to use something sheer.

You can use our sunburst kit to make a sheer sunburst on your transom. Even though the window is rectangular there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to make the sunburst fit into it.

To get the right size kit for your window measure all four sides of the transom. If needed you can combine more than one kit.

Here you can get the sunburst kit.

Good Luck!

"Cover" Window above Sliding Doors?

by Pat
(California, MD, USA)

Question

I have a set of sliding glass door on the back of the house, in the kitchen/breakfast nook area. Above it, there is a narrow rectangular window just above it.

I happened to find some off-the-rack drapes that I just love and perfect suit the room's decor. The catch is that they are not long enough for me to place the brackets and rod above that narrow window.

Can I hang the rod in between the top of the doors and that top window? Or will that not look right?

Answer

You can definitely cover just the sliding doors if you wish. These upper windows known as transoms are very often left open. Actually it looks more right this way.

Covering the transoms together with the sliding doors does not look as professional. You could however decorate them separately.

You can put our mock shutters on them to give them architecture and style.
