Sliding Door Cornice Alternative

by Rosemarie

Question

We live in Florida and our exterior walls are all glass sliding doors. I had fabric covered cornices made and the larger door is 14' across. When the curved cornice was installed in looked great until it started curving in toward the windows. It was removed and stabilized with another piece of plywood under the fabric. It is not curving inward again. I would like to find an alternative to cornice boards for these windows.

Answer

Take a look at our overlapping swag valance that can be made for very wide windows or doors.

Sliding Glass Door on West side of house

Question

The sliding glass door is on the West side of the house, therefore I need vertical blinds to keep the sun out in the middle of the day.

I thought I wanted a wooden valance to cover up the ugly white rod that holds the vertical blinds. So I called the guy that made my mantle to see if it could be possible. He said that the "mantle" type valance would distract from the mantle above the fireplace on the North side of the room.

He said it would be too much wood and therefore he suggested that he make me a wooden valance made out of poplar and paint it the same color as the rest of the room. Well, fine, but then I have a new problem....boring......

I want to keep the sheers that I have in back of the vertical blinds for looks mostly and keeping all that glass covered up when I don't need the vertical blinds closed. I have the sheers on a spring loaded rod and I keep them all the way across in the winter, so I don't have to look at the snow, and half way across in the summer so I can open the sliding door.......

Do you have any suggestions for my particular problem? I don't know how to upload a picture of the window.

Thank you so much....Joyce

Answer

Hi Joyce

You can have the wooden valance covered with fabric; it's called a fabric covered cornice. This would really add a something exciting to your room.
