Skylight Shades: an energy saving solution
Does your skylight heat up your home?
Or let the cold sneak in on winter nights?
Skylight shades will help control the temperature in your home and in your home while cutting your energy bills.
Skylights provide rooms with a brighter, more open and airy feeling often not possible with standard windows. However, skylights also allow sunlight in and can overheat your house.
In the winter, you might enjoy the free solar heat that you get from the skylights, but as soon as the sun sets the heat (which rises) will escape from an unprotected window.
So you will need to cover your skylight in the hot summer days and in the cold winter nights. With the rising energy costs skylight window treatments will pay for themselves in as little as one season.
Now what window treatment can you use for skylights? Consider this. Skylights are on the roof and they lay either horizontally or on a slant. How will the shade lay properly and not hang or sag?
Therefore, you can not simply hang any window treatment onto your skylight, but you must use tension shades which are especially designed for it.
Cellular (honeycomb) shades and pleated shades can come with a lifting system special for skylights. Operated either manually (with a 116" extension pole) or with switch- and remote-control motorized operation, it will work on any slope or in any orientation.
Cellular shades are also known for being energy efficient (another good reason to use them for skylights.)They are made up of layers of pleated material. These layers form cells that trap air in them, creating a layer of insulation, keeping the heat outsde in the summer and inside in the winter.
If you want to be able to control exactly how much light should enter through your skylight, vertical blinds with top and bottom tracks might be the solution. This lifting system will keep the verticals from hanging downwards.
