Plantation Shutters for Sliding Glass Doors?

Question

I love Plantation Shutters and wondering if it is possible for them to be installed on sliding glass doors?

Thank you for your help.

Answer

Plantation shutters are ideal for sliding glass doors, but which way to operate the shutters depends a lot on how much space you have near the doors.

If you want the shutters to operate like sliding doors, you can either have them open just like the sliding doors themselves and one glass will stay covered. Or if you have place on the side of the doors you can outside mount the shutters and extend the tracks so that the shutters stack on the side, near but not in front of, the glass doors.

Another way to use shutters with sliding glass doors is with shutters that fold away in a fan style as they open. Like this you can open them without taking up too much wall space. You can choose to have folding panels on one or both sides.

6 foot sliding glass door

Question

I have a sliding glass door in my bedroom and have cellular vertical blinds mounted on the outside of the frame. Just got them installed and now I'm noticing that it's much brighter in the morning than with my old verticals. Looking for something to darken the room. Each glass door is 33" wide and 74" high (2). Thanks.

Answer

The reason why your room is brighter is because the cellular verticals are light filtering meaning that it lets light in. Your old verticals might have been made of PVC which is room darkening.

However there is a solution for you. You can get room darkening inserts. These are put into the pockets of the cellular shades to make them room darkening.

Here you can find additional sliding door window treatment ideas.
