Arched dormer windows

Question

I am trying to make curtains for a nursery that has 2 dormer windows with the half-moon window at the top.

Ideally, I would like to find an arched rod that would be strong enough to support cotton curtains lined with blackout fabric.

There is no molding around the window - they are just set in about 3 inches. Don't know whether to try and hang the curtains inside or out.

I'm afraid I'm in over my head!! Must do something soon as the baby's due Nov. 15 - Please advise.

Thank you,

Answer

Our arched curtain rods will work for light to medium weight fabric. You can see a what others have done on their arched window.

If you don't have a molding you can still mount inside if there is a window ledge to hang the arched shade.

Measuring an Arched Window

Question

I would like to order drapes that have arched tops.

However, how do I measure my arched window? Do I measure from the top of the arch straight to the bottom of the window, or do I measure a little above the arch (if so by how much) to the bottom of the window?

Thank you

Answer

Like many things in window decorating, personal taste is the answer.

You might want to put the drapes within your window; this will keep your window more to its actual size. You can easily keep to the exact arch shape by using our arch rod kit that bends according to the arch shape. This is useful if you are using lighter fabric.

If you want to make the shade larger and more showy, you can add an even amount of inches around the arch. It can be two to eight inches (more for a larger window and less for a smaller window since the larger a window is, the more extra bulk it can take.) In this case you would need to outside mount the shade. Any weight fabric is good for this choice.

If you want to use medallions to hang your shades on, you will need to outside mount it. The amount of space you need to add depends on the size of the medallion, which needs to fit outside the window frame.
